Abstract

Pediatric cataract is a leading cause of childhood blindness.It lead to social,economical and emotional burden to child,family and society.Blindness related to pediatric cataract can be treated with early identification and appropriate management.Careful systemic and ocular examination to rule out other causes of leukocoria and any sytemic associations is essential before undertaking surgery.Timely diagnosis,management and visual rehabilitation of a child with pediatric cataract are crucial determinants of a favourable prognosis.Primary health care professionals play vital role in timely referral of such cases to centers with expertise to deal with the condition and hence should have the basic knowledge in diagnosis and evaluation of pediatric cataract.
