Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy (DR),a microvascular ocular sight-threatening complication of diabetes is one of the causes of preventable blindness if timely managed. Most literature on Diabetic Retinopathy are derived from the Western world. The results of landmark clinical trials are extrapolated to the Indian context and is the basis of preferred practice patterns in India. With a global prevalence of over 537 million people with diabetes, India is home to over 100 million , and it is important to understand the Indian picture and the burden on the Indian health care systems. While there are earlier publications on DR in India, the SMART India study was the first population based prospective study with pan-India representation. Given the magnitude of the problem, the need to understand the challenges is vital. This IC will walk you through the published results of the SMART India study and National prevalence of DR and blindness in known and unknown diabetes and economic implications.
